Not everyone celebrates Christmas, but it’s a wonderful time of year for families.

When I was younger, I didn’t understand that not everyone celebrates Christmas. I assumed everyone woke up on Christmas morning, opened a bunch of presents, and then sat around and played most of the day. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that Christmas is not the same for everyone as people have different beliefs, and billions of people that live outside of the United States.

However, Christmas is one of the few days in the entire year where almost the entire country has the day off of work (with the exception of emergency care, and a few others). This means that it’s one of the primary times that entire families are together for a full day, or at least have the opportunity to be together.

While Christmas may mean Santa and presents for many, for others it’s simply a day where they can enjoy time together with their family. Millions of people have different traditions that they like to enjoy - perhaps it’s getting Chinese food or going to the movie. Whatever you choose to do on this day, make sure to take a few minutes to focus on the good things that you have in your life.

Just over a month ago was Thanksgiving, and many families were together and you had the opportunity to be grateful then. Less than a month has passed, and you have the opportunity again. This is one of the best times to focus on the things that are really important in your life and be grateful for them. Over the coming week, you’ll have the chance to focus on the things that you want to improve in your home and life, so for now you should revel in the good things.

If you do celebrate Christmas, make sure kids are not overly spoiled with presents. Most kids are happy with a couple of presents in general. They don’t need 10 (or more) different gifts on Christmas to make it wonderful. Get them a couple of items, help them learn to be grateful for the things they receive, and don’t spoil them. The earlier in life you start giving them a lot of presents, the more entitled they’ll feel as they grow older when it comes to Christmas and present time. Help your kids focus on building positive and healthy habits.

If you have the day off, don’t push yourself too hard. Christmas is one of the best times to get off of your feet and relax. Enjoy a day of rest and relaxation with those who you love. If you’re not able to be with your family, then try to do something that makes you happy - read a book, play a game, write a book, or draw something. Whatever it may be, enjoy a day to yourself as much as you can.

Christmas can be a great holiday for families, regardless of your beliefs and how you celebrate. Enjoy time with your family, let them know you love them, and relax a bit as the busy time of year is about to begin.
