You might find that your child likes some odd food pairings.

Yes, kids are quite weird when it comes to food (they are weird in other ways too). They love something today, and then they hate it tomorrow. Picky eaters seem to hate everything but a very specific set of foods and simply don’t want to give anything else a chance. Then some kids will eat just about anything you put in front of them (you should be jumping for joy if your child is like this as it is not super common).

Kids also like to put some pretty weird combinations of things together - certainly things that you’d likely never eat. We’re not talking about putting ketchup on everything - kids do that all the time. Ketchup on pasta isn’t that weird - sure I wouldn’t do it, but it makes sense as ketchup is simply a tomato based condiment. No, we’re talking about combinations that simply make no sense - see below for some of the things our kids have wanted.

Cereal and pickles

Sometimes, eating sugar loaded cereal isn’t very exciting. We limit cereal to once a week (usually on Saturday), so it’s surprising when the kids want something else. Apparently my son wanted something a little salty to complement his sweet cereal. He didn’t just want the pickle on the side. Nope, needed it to be cut up into little pieces and put in with the rest of his cereal. Cereal, pickles, and milk - enjoy your breakfast (he ate all of it).

Macaroni and peanut butter

This is one I could get behind...if there wasn’t cheese on the macaroni. We generally avoid boxed macaroni and cheese, but we had a box of it for lunch. My son was convinced that he wanted peanut butter as well. I assumed a sandwich, but he was adamant that the peanut butter go right in with the mac and cheese. Gross (although I didn’t try it). If it was plain macaroni, then I could possibly see the allure of adding some peanut butter, but not with that fake yellow powder that goes on mac and cheese.

Grilled cheese peanut butter

This is probably the best option on this list. If you were going to force me to eat something, then I could handle this one pretty easily I think. Still not something I would do on my own though. We had grilled cheese sandwiches (were probably eating some type of soup as well). My son once again declared that he needed peanut butter on the top of his sandwich. Apparently ketchup wouldn’t do, he had to have something nutty I guess. I love peanut butter, so I guess it has rubbed off on my kids.

Cookie sandwich (mustard, meat, cheese)

This is just gross. Don’t ruin a good sweet cookie by asking to make it into a sandwich, especially if you’re putting condiments on as well. Cookies are also a pretty big treat in our house, so it’s kind of surprising that my kid wanted to ruin them. He needed all of his favorite sandwich makings right on the top of the cookie - mustard, a sliced pickle, cheese, and a slice of deli meat. Probably one of the sweetest sandwiches he’s ever had, and probably one of the most disgusting cookies.

Oatmeal and tuna

This makes me want to throw up just thinking about it - granted tuna isn’t my favorite food, but I can eat it. Oatmeal was made as we usually do - water, applesauce, and some raisins. My son wasn’t having any of it though unless I added plain tuna as well. Opened a can of tuna he could eat on the side and he dumped it right in the oatmeal. Mixed it up a bit, and then proceeded to eat the meal. I think I’ll keep eating my tuna as a sandwich, but if you ever are looking to add it to your breakfast then go for it.

Conclusion

Kids like to eat weird things sometimes. As long as what they want to add to the food is pretty healthy, then go ahead and let them try it - you never know what your new favorite food might be.
