Fires are both fun and dangerous for kids. Fire is powerful and bright, and kids are always fascinated by it. Have a fun and safe time at home.

Having a fire in your own backyard is a simple way to have a camp-like experience without some of the other inconveniences of camping. If you have little kids, camping can be really hard to do, but you can still enjoy some of the fun of camping at your own home.

Before building a fire in your backyard, you’ll want to verify that your city doesn’t have any restrictions on doing so. While it’s usually uncommon, if you’re in a fire zone that has a high risk of fire, it’s possible that starting a fire is against the rules in your area depending on the time of year.

Once you know that you’re able to have a fire in your area, then it’s time to get ready. You’ll need to have a couple of things to have a fun and safe experience.

First, you’ll need to have a place to actually build your fire. Fire can easily get out of hand if it is not controlled and built in a safe fire pit. While you can build your own fire pit, that’s a lot of work if you’re not sure how often you’ll use it. If you do go this route, please make sure you build a pit that is both wide enough and has enough protection around the edge to keep your fire under control. It’s not worth doing this halfway.

The simpler way to do a fire in your backyard is to buy a fire pit. These range greatly in price, but can be quite affordable. Depending on the model you buy, they can also be moved easily to different locations. We have a basic model that is simple to move but is large enough to have a decent fire.

The second thing you’ll need is a place to actually have your fire at. Make sure that you’re not too close to your home - at least 10 feet. Also make sure you’re at least 10 feet from any other structures or flammable materials. In other words, you’ll want a decent clearing in order to make this work and keep things safe.

Finally, you’ll need wood to actually burn. There are lots of ways to obtain wood, but one of the simplest ways is to buy wood at your local grocery store - they often sell firewood.

Here are a few other things that we’d recommend that you have for your home campfire:

Once your fire is complete, make sure that you completely put your fire out. Do not let it smolder as it can easily get out of control. Make sure you have water close by. Cover the entire fire with water, mix and move any logs not fully burned, and douse with water again. Prepare for a lot of smoke.

Conclusion

Having fires outdoors at home is a fun and simple way to entertain yourself and your kids. Taking the correct precautions can lead to a safe and fun time.
