A look back at the last year on Thrive With Kids.

To say that this past year has been a wild one would be quite the understatement. This has been one of the most historic and odd years that has ever occurred. While we didn’t launch this site right as the pandemic started, it was pretty close. Less than a month before the United States shutdown, we started this site to help parents thrive while having kids.

While we certainly wrote about many of the things that we had planned to do when we started this site, there are other things that we’ve barely touched on. Taking a look back at the last year to see how things went and planned, and how they didn’t.

Fitness, Reading, and Healthy Living

We had always planned to focus on fitness, reading, and healthy living. That was something we stayed the course on throughout the year. Fitness and healthy living are often hard things to make a priority when you have kids. Time and energy are low, and trying to make them happen is extremely difficult. However, eating right and rewarding yourself by working out will often set you ahead in many areas of life.

Reading is really a hobby that we find important, but others do not. We think it’s one of the best ways to spend any free time that you may have as a parent, but not everyone will agree. What’s really important is that you’re finding time for yourself as a parent - while you should spend time with your kids, you should also make time to do the things that you enjoy.

More focus on parenting tips than expected

We wrote far more articles related to parenting than we had originally thought we would. The plan was originally to focus on how to make yourself a better person outside of your parenting. However, as we started writing and producing articles, we realized that there were a lot of people out there who wanted to read about parenting related issues.

Our goal with these articles has been to be as open and honest about the things you may really encounter. We didn’t really want to write a bunch of fluff pieces about how parenting is great, or how you really potty train. Instead, we chose to focus on actual emotions and uncomfortable situations that you’ll invariably find yourself in as a parent. There’s no need to sugarcoat it - there are lots of sites like that out there.

We didn’t travel

By far the biggest change that occurred was that we didn’t write about travel hardly at all. We actually still have some articles that we wrote nearly a year ago in the backlog to release at some point in the future when the time is right. However, most of them don’t make sense in the current climate so we’ll publish them when it makes sense to do so.

We didn’t do any travel as a family either. This was the year we had planned multiple trips, and several things that we don’t normally do, and all of them were cancelled. While we were certainly sad to miss out on the trips, we also would prefer to have been safe rather than putting ourselves in compromised situations. We’re hoping this year is a bit nicer in terms of being able to make a few trips.

Conclusion

We’re looking forward to another year ahead. While we’re excited to get back to travel at some point, we’re also looking forward to spending another year with our kids as they continue to grow up.
