Don’t feel bad when you don’t live up to the parents in your kids favorite shows.

Have you ever noticed that the parents in movies and shows are often awesome. They seem to be good looking, funny, and are often making the right choices. They are the perfect parents for their kids, and everyone loves them. Sure, there are shows where this isn’t the case, but more often than not you’re looking at great parents all the time. Stop comparing yourself to them though as it’s simply not real.

There are always areas of our lives that we can improve on. No parent is perfect, in spite of what it may seem like on the outside. Some people are able to put on a good face and make it look like they are doing everything perfectly. And some people do have it better at being a parent and are doing better than others, but there is always room for improvement no matter how good you are at something.

When it comes to parents that you see on television, you simply should ignore how good they are compared to you. It’s easy to be a great parent when every word you speak and everything you do has been scripted. They look like they have everything under control and that they can do anything, and that’s because they can. They’re literally written and scripted out to actually be the best they can.

You can still learn from these parents in shows, but you shouldn’t compare yourself to them. If there are areas in your parenting that you want to improve in, then focus on how the parents in shows are doing better at it then you are. Figure out how you can make the changes in your life to actually be the parent you want to be. Set goals and changes for yourself to be able to make noticeable progress towards your goals.

How often do you see a parent on a television show that hasn’t slept for more than 2 hours at night? The person playing the parent slept soundly the night before and showed up to play a character. If it’s an animated show, they don’t have to sleep. In real life, parents often are sleep deprived while also trying to make the correct parenting decisions. That’s much harder to do than to talk about.

It’s not really a good idea to compare yourself to parents that you actually know either. If you have friends that you follow or see on social media, it would be really easy to get down when you see posts about how being a parent is awesome and the best thing ever. While there are parts of parenting that are great, seeing a single snapshot of another parent doesn’t give a realistic picture of what parenting actually looks like.

You know where you’re doing good as a parent. You know where you’re not doing well and where you can improve. You should always work on being better in every area of your life, be it parenting or otherwise. In order to do that though, you need to focus on yourself, not on what others are projecting or showing. Work on yourself to get better, but don’t get down if you’re not living up to some fake standard.

Stop comparing yourself to those in movies and shows. It’s not real. Be the best parent you can be, and work on getting better.
