Letting kids play in their room alone is great for some quiet time if your child will stay in there.

Many parents are nervous about leaving their kids alone in their room. It’s a fair concern, especially when your kids are still very young. It’s generally not a good idea to leave a child that is very young alone for more than a few minutes. You simply never know what they will get into or put in their mouth.

However, there will come a time when your child can take care of themselves in their room. If you keep the smallest toys out of their room, then you won’t have to worry about things in their mouth. Keep other unsafe toys (toys with strings and otherwise) out of the room, and you should be able to safely leave a child to play alone in their room.

This doesn’t mean that you should lock your child in their room - locking a child in their room should never be something you do (or is even possible if you have your locks installed correctly in your home). However, you shouldn’t be afraid to have a child play in their room without you in there. You can let them play with their toy, read their books, or otherwise without you there.

There are multiple benefits to letting your child play in their room alone. First off, you’ll have extra time to do the things that you need to do around the house. Many parents find extra time to do things around the house to be pretty rare. If you can get your child to play quietly in their room, this is about as ideal as it comes. Another benefit is that your child will learn how to entertain themselves. It’s great for your child to be social and play with others, but knowing how to entertain yourself is an excellent skill to have as well.

If you worry a lot, then you might be scared to leave your child in their room by themselves. First off, just because your child is playing alone in their room, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check on them. Feel free to go in and make sure they’re doing alright. You can also just stand outside the door and listen so as to not disturb their play. Furthermore, if you have a baby camera, there’s no reason that you can’t set it up and watch that while your child plays. That will allow you to see what they’re doing the whole time without having to be in the same room as them.

Kids can find really interesting ways to entertain themselves when they’re alone if you let them. You may be surprised to learn that their favorite toy is something completely different than what they like to play with when other people are around. We’ve found that our son loves to look at books, and he can look through 30 books in a row happily.

Kids don’t have to be watched every second of every day while they are still little. Let them play by themselves, and get done the thing that you need around the house.
