Most furniture won’t come out unscathed when you have kids.

You need a new couch. Your current couch is ripped, has several stains on it, and is in generally poor condition. Your child has likely not been good to the current couch which makes the decision of your next couch all the harder. You want something nice, but you don’t want to spend too much money as you’re sure it will have several more accidents in the years to come. It’s a tough choice.

When buying new furniture, the decision is usually pretty easy without kids. At the very least, you’re not worried about how a child will take care of it (or not take care of it as the case may be). When you have kids, you have to at the very least look at the furniture with a different eye. Will your kids interact with the furniture? Will they eat on it? Drop food on it? Wipe their boogers all over it?

There are generally two different ways to buy new furniture when you have a child. You buy used furniture that meets your other requirements, or you buy new furniture that is meant to get you through until your child is old enough to be more responsible with the furniture that you’re buying. There are pros and cons to both strategies, but both are generally the best options that are available to you.

Of course, you could always buy a nice new expensive piece of furniture in spite of kids, but you’ll likely find that it won’t stay in the condition you bought it in for very long. If money isn’t a major concern for you, then you can go this route - you’ll have the best of all worlds. For the rest of us, we don’t really have unlimited funds to spend on furniture, so we have to figure out the best way to make do for now.

Buying cheap furniture that isn’t exactly what you want is a great strategy to help get you through. There’s a good chance that you’re going to have to replace the furniture again at some point anyways, so buying something cheaper right now is a great way to simply save money at the current time. You can use the money later to buy something nice that is exactly what you want when your child won’t destroy it.

Alternatively, if you’re open to used furniture, you can likely find incredible deals on mostly new furniture on websites that sell used items. People will sell things at a very reduced price to get rid of them quickly, even when they’re in awesome condition. You can find furniture up to 90% cheaper in some cases if you’ll spend the time to look. It’s a great way to get something nice at the lower price.

The downside to used furniture is that you have no guarantee on how it has been handled or taken care of in the past. You’ll want to look at the furniture closely before you agree to buy to make sure it’s what you actually think that you’re getting. However, you can get a piece of furniture that is central to your home or room even with a kid that seems to destroy everything that you buy.

Buying furniture with kids can mean you have to compromise at times, but it doesn’t mean you can’t buy new furniture. Just realize that you may have to replace the furniture again in the future.
