Kids love to watch animals. If you’ve got a farm nearby, then taking your kids to watch the animals is a simple way to keep them entertained.

One of our favorite outdoor activities that we’ve been doing a lot of is watching farm animals. Kids are generally enamored with animals, especially those that they don’t see on a regular basis. While my kids like to see a dog or cat, whenever they see a horse or cow, they are immediately riveted by it.

There’s a home that is along a place we often drive that has horses. My son always likes to watch for them to see if they’re out or not. If they’re not out, then he makes sure to tell me that they are sleeping. If he forgets about them when we drive, he’ll often remember later and ask me if the horses were out or not.

Driving by and checking out animals can be fun, but an even better activity is to let the kids get a closer look at the animals. This means that you’ll need to find a place that you can actually stop to be able to watch the animals. Perhaps you just pull off the road somewhere, or perhaps you actually get out of your car. It will depend on the area that you’re in.

We have a couple of farms in the general area where we live (within 30 minutes) that we can drive to and they’ll let you on the actual farm to see the animals. Both of these farms are a lot of fun for the kids as they have all kinds of different animals that you can look at and enjoy - pigs, turkeys, geese, and all the other good farm animals.

If you don’t have a full out farm close by, you can also just find a home that has horses where you can see them from the road/public property. In our area, we actually have several homes where this is the case. We like to stop by and just watch the animals for a bit of time. It’s a great time to teach your kids a bit about the different animals - what do they eat, when do they sleep, what uses do the animals have (food , labor, etc.)? You can ask a lot of questions, and in many cases, you may learn something new yourself.

If you know someone with horses, then you may be able to take your kids riding as well. While we don’t know anyone (at least close by) that has horses, this could be a really fun experience for the whole family. I’ve been horseback riding a couple of times before, and it’s always been a fun experience. If you have the chance, definitely take your kids out.

Watching farm animals in general can make for an enjoyable activity for the whole family. Anything more, and it can be a real adventure.
